How Children Learn

I just received this from my friend Mary Ann, it’s a gem worth passing along.

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING    by:-Mary Rita Schilke Korzan
(A message every adult should read because children
are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.)

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you hang my
first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately
wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you feed a
stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind
to animals.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make my
favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little
things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I heard you say a
prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always
talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make a
meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I
learned that we all have to help take care of each
other.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you give of
your time and money to help people who had nothing,
and I learned that those who have something should
give to those who don’t.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you take care
of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have
to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw how you
handled your responsibilities, even when you didn’t
feel good, and I learned that I would have to be
responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw tears come
from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things
hurt, but it’s all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw that you
cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I learned most of
life’s lessons that I need to know to be a good and
productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I looked at you and
wanted to say,’Thanks for all the things I saw when
you thought I wasn’t looking.

The Whole Truth About Weight Loss

The Whole Truth About Weight Loss

Before we get into this, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am 51 years old and a mother of 7 kids. I am 5’ 3” slim and athletic and about 108 pounds. Now I’m not bragging here, just letting you know that I do know a thing or two about maintaining a healthy weight, even after having a bunch of kids.

The first thing that you need to understand is that most of what you’ve heard about weight loss is bogus. You are just not going to hear the truth, unless you really dig. The truth is not profitable.

Forget the food pyramid, its recommendations of 6 to 11 servings of REFINED carbohydrates is designed to make you fat. This is obvious, as the obesity epidemic came into full swing shortly after the food pyramid “guide” was thrust upon the public, as well as the push to use fake fats, fake sugars, fake foods (see a connection?) and the perfection of the feedlot.

I am not going to go into too many details, otherwise this blog will easily become a book, but I will recommend books that you can read to substantiate my facts. Also, please don’t use the cop-out that your genes are making you fat. Your genes are merely dumb storage facilities that do very little to influence your health. This is GREAT news as otherwise you’d be helpless to do anything about your health, or your weight, which, of course, isn’t true at all. You can read the book The Biology Of Belief: Unleashing The Power Of Consciousness, Matter And Miracles A few other points of interest: the only two species in ALL of nature that become fat are HUMANS AND THEIR DOMESTIC PETS.That should give you a little clue as to what makes you fat, it sure isn’t a natural, wholesome diet of raw foods! First, here’s all the stuff that makes you fat. 1) SODA and SUGAR Soda contains lots of sugar, usually in the form of High Fructose Corn Syrup All sugars cause a rapid rise in blood glucose, however fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar. To compensate for the rapid rise in blood sugar, (more…)

Focus On What You Want, Especially When It Comes To Disciplining Your Kids

Being the mother of seven kids, there were a few revelations that hit me like the proverbial “ton of bricks”, they were just so obvious I can’t understand how I missed them. Also, I’ve made a fascinating attempt to learn to think like a kid so I could at least begin to understand them.

How would you feel if you were trained for your job by someone who gave you all the specifics about what not to do, while giving you little or no explanation of how to do the job? Would you be frustrated? Do you think you’d do an exemplary job with so little to go on?

Yet as parents, coaches and teachers we do this to kids quite frequently. It seems like I am forever hearing folks say “DON”T….throw your clothes on the floor, slam the door, talk to your brother that way/talk to me that way, yell, swear, cry,” etc etc. Or from us skating coaches “DON’T….look down, turn your head, slow down, talk,”etc. My 12 year old son got an “I won’t forget my book” 100 times writing assignment, he got the same one a few days later….telling kids what not to do does NOT work for a few reasons.
