The main function of the immune system is to protect the body against foreign invaders such as disease-causing bacteria, fungus, viruses and other toxins.  One of the ways it does this is by producing inflammation, which is when the body produces white blood cells and and other chemicals to protect itself from foreign substances.   

We are constantly told that autoimmune diseases occur when the body “attacks itself” supposedly creating inflammation in healthy tissue.  However, the body knows what it is doing when it tries to protect itself.  Instead of assuming that the body is “attacking itself” we could look at the thousands of toxins in our food and environment and note that in this huge chemical burden the body is doing it’s best to protect itself from poisons.  When we try to halt the inflammation without addressing the underlying CAUSE of the inflammation, we set the stage for more deadly diseases such as cancer.

Studies have shown that when people feel loved or give love they live longer, feel happier, have better health, make more money and are less prone to depression.

Love, compassion and joy make our immune system function better and help fight diseases.

Researchers found happily married people had the best blood pressure, followed by singles. Unhappily married participants fared the worst.

In another study, researchers subjected 16 married women to the threat of an electric shock. When the women were holding their husband’s hand, they showed less response in the brain areas associated with stress. The happier the marriage, the greater the effect.

Researchers at Ohio State University Medical Center gave married couples blister wounds. The wounds healed nearly twice as fast in spouses who interacted warmly compared with those who demonstrated a lot of hostility toward each other. The study was published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Oxytocin is a brain chemical that is released when mothers and babies first bond.

Massage, eye contact, hugs, and orgasms all increase oxytocin levels. A close, loving relationship increases the production of this brain chemical (single men and women produce less oxytocin than those in intimate relationships). Any positive experience can increase oxytocin levels – and so can simply recalling positive events.  Oxytocin is associated with positive relationships.

Dr Kai MacDonald and other University of California (San Diego) researchers are theorizing that oxytocin could help with psychological disorders. It reduces fear, increases eye contact, and increases trust and generosity.

In another study, people who considered themselves to be passionately in love were given brain scans (MRIs) and it was seen that the brain sees romantic love as a reward, stimulating activity in the same areas that light up when a person receives any kind of a reward.

Black elderberry has been used as a natural remedy for common ailments such as coughs and colds for centuries but recent research has pinpointed an active element called Antivirin which combats the flu virus. Antivirin is found in proteins of the black elderberry and disarms the flu virus by preventing it from invading healthy cells’ membranes. 

Elderberry has a very high ORAC, or oxygen radical absorption capacity: over twice as much as blueberry. In addition, antioxidants called flavonoids stimulate the immune system. Other compounds in elderberry, called anthocyanins, have an anti-inflammatory effect; which would explain the effect on aches, pains, and fever.

A study done by Erling Thom, with the University of Oslo in Norway, involved 60 patients who had been suffering with flu symptoms for 48 hours or less; 90% were infected with the A strain of the virus, 10% were infected with type B. Half the group took 15 milliliters of Sambucol (a brand of elderberry extract)  and the other group took a placebo four times a day for five days. 

Patients in the Sambucol group had “pronounced improvements” in flu symptoms after three days: Nearly 90% of patients had complete cure within two to three days. Also, the Sambucol group had no drowsiness, the downside of many flu treatments.

The placebo group didn’t recover until at least day six; they also took more painkillers and nasal sprays.

Thom’s findings were presented at the 15th Annual Conference on Antiviral Research in 2002. The study has been accepted for publication in the Journal of International Medical Research.

Subsequent research has also shown black elderberry extract to be effective against the Herpes simplex, HIV and Bird Flu virus.

It’s called phototherapy, and the number of potential applications for this technology are staggering.

Many studies have been done proving the effectiveness of LED lights to kill bacteria and treat acne, mouth sores from chemotherapy and diabetic wounds.

Light-based therapy can also treat depression, heal broken bones, heal flesh wounds, invoke healthy sleep patterns, and even function as an appetite suppressant. Using it to kill bacteria is just one of many exciting applications of phototherapy.

Light emitting diodes (LED’s) commonly used for clock displays and in many other electronic devices - produce near-infrared light, a form of energy just outside the visible range. Cells exposed to LED light in this range have been found to grow 150% to 200% faster than cells not exposed to a  LED “bath” because, in simple terms, the light  speeds up the healing process by increasing energy inside the cells.

In one study pure samples and those containing dental plaque were collected from patients with chronic periodontitis and exposed to varying degrees of broadband light. This is the same light source commonly used in teeth whitening procedures. The researchers compared bacterial presence before and after light treatment and found that bacteria were significantly reduced after exposure.

UV light kills cells by damaging DNA. It causes the nucleic acids in DNA to break their bonds and pair incorrectly (thymine seems to be especially affected). This causes the DNA to either be unreadable or misread, and that in turn causes the bacteria or viruses to be unable to carry out their normal functions or reproduce correctly.

As you know UV light is harmful for most organisms - the effects are more pronounced for bacteria and viruses, since the DNA in viruses and bacteria tends to be poorly shielded (it’s more exposed to the UV light).

Even before the baby Jesus received Myrrh as a gift over 2000 years ago, it was one of the most desired and sought after items in the world. Myrrh stimulates circulation to mucosal tissues, especially in the bronchial tract, throat, tonsils, and gums. It is an anti-inflammatory, an antioxidant, and antimicrobial, making it ideal for painful or swollen tissues. It is useful for bleeding gums, gingivitis, tonsillitis, sore throat (including strep throat), and bronchitis. The increased blood supply helps fight infection and speed healing of colds, congestion, or infection of the throat or mouth.

Myrrh is also an expectorant, which means it promotes the expulsion of mucus in cases of bronchitis and lung congestion. Myrrh is best for chronic conditions with pale and swollen tissues, rather than for acute, inflamed, red, and dry tissues, because it contains tannins and resins, which have an astringent effect on tissues.

Taken internally myrrh is a beneficial treatment for loose teeth, gingivitis, and bad breath. The tincture may also be applied directly to a tooth to relieve tooth ache. It is antifungal, and has been used to treat athlete’s foot and candida.

So strong are the antimicrobial effects of myrrh that the ancient Egyptians relied on this plant for the process of embalming and mummification.

The March 1978 issue of Science Digest, in an article, “Our Mightiest Germ Fighter,” reported: “Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine. An antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic.” The article ended with a quote by Dr. Harry Margraf, a biochemist and pioneering silver researcher who worked with the late Carl Moyer, M.D., chairman of Washington University’s Department of Surgery in the 1970s: “Silver is the best all-around germ fighter we have.”

Silver has long been recognized in recorded history (as early as 69 B.C.) as having germicidal properties.  In the days before refrigeration, farmers tossed a silver coin in a bucket of milk to preserve it. Chemists put silver dimes in Petri dishes to sterilize them. For many years, it was common practice to place silver wires and threads around infected wounds that refused to heal.

Documented scientific and specific use of colloidal silver began in the late 1800’s and continued extensively through the 1920’s. Prior to 1938, colloidal silver was considered to be one of the mainstays of antibiotic treatment.

The return of silver in medicine began in the 1970s. While studying regeneration of limbs, spinal cords and organs, Robert O. Becker, M.D., author of The Body Electric, discovered that silver ions promote bone growth and kill surrounding bacteria.

Also in the 70s, Dr. Carl Moyer, chairman of Washington University’s Department of Surgery, received a grant to develop better treatment for burn victims. His team worked to find a strong antibiotic that would be safe enough to use over large areas of the body. Reviewing medical literature, they found repeated references to silver. It was described as being a catalyst that disabled the enzymes which microorganisms depended on to “breathe”, consequently, the microorganisms died. Dr. Moyer’s team diluted silver nitrate and found that it killed the pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and allowed wounds to heal. Resistant strains did not appear. But this silver nitrate dilution was far from ideal so they kept looking into other preparations of silver. As a result of this and other researchers’ efforts, hundreds of important new medical uses for silver were found.

The presence of colloidal silver near a virus, fungus, bacterium or any other single celled pathogen disables its oxygen metabolism enzyme. Within a few minutes, the pathogen suffocates and dies, and is cleared out of the body by the immune, lymphatic and elimination systems. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, colloidal silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different from the enzymes of primitive single-celled life.

Coloidal silver is mostly fine particles of silver, whereas ionic silver is predominantly silver ions with a small amount of silver particles.  You can make your own ionic silver at home using silver rods and a few batteries, or you can buy a colloidal silver maker which is basically the same thing. 

There have been a few cases of argyria reported by people using extreme amounts of silver, this is a condition that causes the skin to turn blue.

The hydrogen peroxide molecule (H202) is basically water (H20) with an extra oxygen atom attached. When that oxygen gets released against germs, it “oxidizes” them.

Your own white blood cells produce hydrogen peroxide because it’s your body’s first and best defense against any infection. It kills bacteria, viruses, yeast, and parasites.  The ability of our cells to produce hydrogen peroxide is essential for life.
